Prepare a backup · ShieldBill Pay

Backup payment processing starts before you need it.

Another payment provider is useful when it is approved, connected and understood by your team. Build that route while you have time to assess the account, the checkout and the way you will operate it.

Start here

A backup is a prepared processing route. It needs its own business approval, working integration and rules for when it can be used.

Start with the interruption you want to prepare for.

An integration outage, an account review and a business-model mismatch call for different responses. Write down the scenario and the payment functions it affects: new checkout, renewals, refunds or access to settlements.

A second route can add options for future payments, but it cannot control another provider’s review or release its funds. Decide what continuity means for your business before selecting a provider or a routing tool.

Start with the interruption you want to prepare for.
LayerWhat ready means
ProviderYour business and intended activity have been assessed and approved.
ConnectionThe checkout or billing integration supports the new route.
Payment credentialsThe intended payment method can validly be used with that provider.
OperationsYour team can reconcile, refund, support and monitor the payments.

Choose another provider that fits your actual activity.

Prepare the same accurate business profile you would for a primary account. Explain why you want another route, your expected volume and any current restrictions. Confirm entity, industry, customer market and recurring-payment support.

Ask how minimums, inactivity, volume changes and settlement terms apply to the proposed use. A dormant account may not be the operational arrangement you expect. Get the relevant responsibilities and limits in the agreement.

  • Which activity and countries are approved?
  • What volumes and payment types does the proposal cover?
  • What work is needed to start or increase processing?
  • What costs apply while the route is available but lightly used?

A second account needs a usable payment path.

Confirm whether your current checkout can connect to the provider, or whether a different integration is needed. Assign ownership of credentials, authentication, webhooks, order status and reconciliation before launch.

For new customers, test the supported checkout flow. For returning customers, assess how payment credentials can be used on the additional route. A saved payment reference on one platform does not by itself prove portability to another.

Build the recurring-payment plan around eligible credentials.

Inventory which provider holds each saved payment method and what your billing system needs for a renewal. Ask the relevant providers whether a supported migration or other valid credential path is available for the proposed setup.

ShieldBill Pay focuses on the provider search and onboarding brief. ShieldBill is a separate billing and routing layer that can be assessed for supported continuity requirements. Confirm the particular providers, payment methods and integration before treating a billing diagram as a working backup.

Give the backup an owner and a rehearsal.

Document who can activate the route, which events justify doing so and how the team avoids duplicate collection. Include provider and network requirements when deciding whether a failed payment may be attempted elsewhere. A second provider is not a reason to retry every decline.

Review the route when your business, checkout or provider terms change. Confirm the contact list, access, account status and the checks needed before live use. Keep the operational playbook short enough to use during an incident.

Common questions.

Does a backup PSP guarantee uninterrupted payments?

No. A route depends on provider approval, integrations, credentials and the situation affecting your business. Prepare and test it, and understand its limits.

Can a backup processor release funds held elsewhere?

No. Settlement and held funds remain governed by the original provider’s account process and agreement.

Will ShieldBill automatically reroute every failed payment?

Discuss the supported integration and decision rules for your setup. Some failures require customer action or must stop; an additional approved provider does not make every retry appropriate.

Can I start by finding another PSP?

Yes. Share your business, current providers and continuity requirements with ShieldBill Pay. Approval and integration are separate steps after the initial discussion.
