Adyen reserve or deposit?
Know your next payout.

Sales don’t pay your bills until the money arrives. Get clear on retained funds, reconcile the next payout and compare your next processor’s terms. Know what your business can use.

Adyen distinguishes a configurable refund reserve from its risk deposit. Identify the actual balance and adjustment before assuming every retained amount is a rolling reserve or account freeze.

Reserve or deposit?
Know the difference.

Open the merchant account’s balances in the Adyen Customer Area. Use the person with the required financial access. Record which balance changed and which transaction or adjustment caused it.

Adyen describes the reserve as funds configured for refunds, chargebacks and operational costs. Its deposit is a separate amount retained for payment-processing exposure. The pending balance and next payout are different again. The label matters when asking what can be paid out.

Reserve and deposit are different balances.
BalanceWhat it means for the question
PendingSales and refunds not yet settled by the payment method.
Next payoutThe amount currently being prepared for the bank payout.
Refund reserveThe configured buffer for refunds and other operational costs.
DepositFunds retained against processing exposure, determined by Adyen.

Payout lower than expected?
Check the adjustment.

Match the balance activity to your settlement report. Separate a deposit correction from a refund-reserve adjustment, processing fees and customer refunds. Keep the merchant account, batch, currency and date consistent.

Adyen’s reporting documentation identifies these different adjustment types. Use them to explain the gap between sales and the bank payout. If a line remains unclear, ask the account team about that specific adjustment rather than requesting release of every balance together.

Deposit requirement changed?
Ask what drove it.

Adyen determines the required deposit using its assessment of payment-processing exposure. Its documentation explains that changes can move funds into or out of the deposit. Check the requirement and the actual balance for your account.

Ask what drove the change, which information the team needs and what applies if processing stops. Do not substitute a refund-reserve setting for a risk-deposit decision. We cannot change Adyen’s assessment or promise when retained funds will become payable.

Comparing another PSP?
Know the payout terms.

If the current setup no longer fits, tell us your products, country, volume and payment channels. Include the reserve or deposit issue accurately. We find suitable PSPs and help compare actual offers.

Review reserve conditions, settlement timing and fees together. The receiving PSP will assess its own risk and can require retained funds too. We do not promise reserve-free approval. Confirm the checkout, subscriptions and saved-card support before choosing the next account.

  • Compare the full written settlement and reserve terms.
  • Separate processing costs from funds retained temporarily.
  • Confirm currencies, markets and supported payment methods.
  • Plan the technical and customer handover before launch.

Ready to change processing?
Keep the handover controlled.

Move future payments only after approval and testing. For subscriptions, confirm eligible credential migration, billing schedules and any customer authorisation. A payment reference is not automatically usable with another PSP.

Retain access for historical refunds, disputes and financial records. Stopping new processing does not make the old deposit immediately available. With ShieldBill, prepare a supported backup and give the team clear activation and reconciliation responsibilities.

Adyen’s refund reserve and risk deposit are different. Another PSP does not control the existing deposit or guarantee reserve-free approval.

Common questions.

Is my Adyen reserve the same as a risk deposit?

No. Adyen distinguishes its refund reserve from the deposit retained against processing exposure. Check the balance name and adjustment in the Customer Area before deciding which question to raise.

Can I choose the Adyen deposit amount myself?

Adyen determines the risk-deposit requirement. Refund-reserve configuration is a different function. Ask the account team about the actual requirement instead of assuming one balance’s controls apply to both.

Why is the payout smaller than my sales?

Match the settlement batch and currency. Fees, refunds, disputes, reserve adjustments and deposit corrections can change the amount. Use the report for the account and period concerned.

Will another PSP release my Adyen deposit?

No. Existing funds and obligations remain with Adyen’s account process. A new processor handles future payments under its own approval and terms.

Can ShieldBill Pay help me switch providers?

Yes. We help find suitable PSPs, prepare onboarding and plan the checkout and recurring-payment handover. Confirm approval, reserve conditions and supported migration before launch.
